Overall, the operating system appears to be more current and closer to a mobile OS. Colors have been brightened, grayscale has been darkened, and numerous icons and menus have been compacted to take up less space (looking at you, Finder). Instead of being circular, app icons are square-shaped. Corners are rounded, whether you’re looking at applications or the dock. The operating system is named after the Big Sur coastal area on California’s Central Coast. To commemorate the shift, the operating system’s main version number was increased from 10 to 11 for the first time since 2000.
